Every device you own is a terminal for something else. The money is a record on a
bank's server. The map is a request to a data centre. The knowledge is a query
answered somewhere far away. The identity belongs to whoever issued it. Cut any one
of those connections and the hardware in your hand keeps its shape and loses its
purpose.
That arrangement is fine right up until it isn't. The ANKH Tablet is built the other
way round: the wallet, the archive, the map and the radio all work with nothing on
the other end. Not because the grid is going down next year, but because a tool
whose usefulness depends on the world staying exactly as it is today is not a tool
you can count on.
The underlying technologies are working. What remains between here and Spring 2027
is manufacturing, certification and the long, unglamorous work of making four
proven things into one object that survives being dropped.
